In Tel Aviv I spent almost 20 minutes in front of the fitting rooms in order to try a shirt, which didn't look good on me anyway. People are looking for gifts not for food. Except for "sufganiyot" ...

How many of us remember the first book borrowed from the school's library?
I do.
It was "Fata moșului și fata babei" (The old man's daughter and the old woman's daughter) by Ion Creangă - a big-size book, thin, lot of pictures, very coloured ...
I can even remember that day - how I went to the library for the first time, the smell of old books and dust, the librarian - a nice young lady - and how happy I was to be finally registred at the library.

Since early childhood I have been told not to run for two rabbit at the same time.

But this applies for elevators too? Even for 4 elevators?

Imagine you leave your office and you are calling the elevator at your floor. And you wait ... you wait ... you hear colleagues from the building getting impatient ... in a few seconds we see them running down the stairs cursing the damn elevators ... 4 elevators and none of them stops at any floor ...but you try over and over again pushing the button ... and you wait ... and you don't feel like rolling down the stairs, you're just too tired ... and when you hear suddenly the beep of one of the elevators, you run faster and faster to catch it ... you think that you are lucky ... you think it's a miracle ... finally, you are in front of the open doors and you want to jump inside ... but hey there are way to many people inside ... crowded ... the smell of another tired people at the end of the day it's too much to bear ... and you quit ... you go back to the spot in the middle of the corridor ... no air conditioned ... you breathe hot air ... you feel helpless ... and then you feel you are happy again ... another elevator stops ... again you run ... but again other people all crowded inside and you don't feel like sharing the place with them ... and again you return to your place and wait for another elevator ... and when you think you should roll down the stairs, here comes the third elevator ... EMPTY!

Have you ever thought what stories do children read nowadays? I took a peak at the shelf with children's books and I have discovered a very beautiful book called "Guess how much I love you" by Sam McBratney and illustrated by Anita Jeram. And this tiny book has brought me more happiness than the other two books of short stories by Etgar Keret which I bought today.

In the twelfth grade I understood for the first time what '48 was. That it's called the War of Independence. In twelfth grade I understood that a Zionist was what we called a Sahyuni, and it wasn't a swearword. I knew the word. That's how we used to curse one another. I'd been sure that Sahyuni was a kind of fat guy, like a bear. Suddenly I understood that Zionism is an ideology. In civics lessons and Jewish history classes, I started to understand that my aunt from Tulkarm is called a refugee, that the Arabs in Israel are called a minority. In twelfth grade I understood that the problem was serious. I understood what a national homeland was, what anti-Semitism was. I heard for the first time about "two thousand years of exile" and how the Jews had fought against the Arabs and the British. I didn’t believe it. No way. The English had wanted the Jews here, after all. In Bible class, I discovered that it was Isaac, not Ismael, who'd been replaced with a sheep.

Drinking coffee in Israel is quite an adventure. Watch out - what you want is not what you get!

Survival guide:

cappuccino - "kafe hafuch" or "twisted coffee", what they mean is an ordinary coffee with milk; until yet I haven't discovered the real cappuccino;
caffe frappe - here they call it simply "ice coffee" and they have some amazing combinations;
caffe latte - and they mean "coffee with milk" but not the above mentioned one :-/
black coffee - don't expect a coffee without sugar because you're wrong; they mean coffee with sugar but with no milk, that's why it's black isn't it!?

And if you still have doubts about coffee in Israel, look at the picture and try to guess what I have ordered. Oh, and I have received a fork and a knife too!

Eran Grebler's dreydlekh

The Old City of Caesaria has it's own special charm, no doubt.
But what makes it even more special for me is the small welcoming gallery of the Israeli artist Eran Grebler.
Spinning the dreydlekh means spinning the memories of my love for Yiddish, means getting even deeper in the Jewish sensibility and re-descovering the child within myself.
Last summer I chosed a hamsa and a "foot"-hamsa. The small vulnerable hamsa sacrifice itself for me - it fell on the floor a couple of seconds after I had fixed it on the wall. It says that when a hamsa is broken, it takes all the Bad with itself and protects the owner. But however I felt pitty on my hamsa. So, after one year almost, I have decided to replace the previous hamsa and to bring to the "foot" it's mate.
And since I believe that things just don't happen by chance, today I picked up the "love and happiness"-hamsa, because I forgot that this was written on the "foot" also.

If you want to try the sushi on Rothschild Blvd. in Tel Aviv, near Neve Tzedek, you should think very well first. No toilet. No avocado. At least the sushi they prepare is delicious.

On the other side of the road there is a very nice and welcoming restaurant called "Benedict", specialized in breakfast. I had no idea what time it was when we entered but the nice waitress welcomed us with "Boker tov" - although it wasn't after midgnight ;-). The capuccino there is delicious, the pancakes are amazing ... the people are young and nice and sweet. It's just one thing I didn't understand: how can you drink water with a straw!?

Frappe

Frappe, this was the magic of summer 2006, when she first met him. She would order frappe and would enjoy his every single word, while he was taking her order. Sometimes she would order a creamy capuccino. She used to go there almost every two days. Alone or with a friend. After a while she knew when his shift was. Frappe and the magic began. "And the lady would enjoy a frappe? ... Yes, it must be always cold, sweet and creamy." - and yes, he knew exactly what she wanted.
And after two years they met again. The same place. The same black t-shirt with something written on the back. The same spiky hair. The same thin beard covering his chin. Only she was different. She didn't come with her old friend. She didn't sit at the old table. She didn't order the old frappe, but a creamy capuccino.
But their eyes met again despite the distance between her table and the bar. He noticed her and tried to catch her attention by dancing like crazy behind the bar. He himself prepared the capuccino because only he knew exactly how she loves it. He himself brought it to her.
It was obvious that this moment triggered the recollection of that summer. For a second they didn't feel the outside world - they were together in a world of their own, alone with their old desire to know each other and still they have always been separated by a sort of a gap, created by the fear of the unknown. None of them had ever the courage to overcome this gap, not back then and, for sure, not now.
And even after all this time, they still don't know each other.
He still works there. She still loves frappe.

Pessach has caused me a serious trauma - "kosher for Pessach" or not, "chametz" or not ...
It's quite shocking to enter a supermarket and to see entire shelves covered by a white curtain on which sometimes is written "chametz".

Out of empathy I ate "matzot" and I realized that the exodus was a cruel thing. Out of empathy I ate food on which was written "kosher for Pessach". But there are some things that bother me seriously: why I cannot eat cereals with milk on breakfast, why there are chips on the shelves on which usually used to be put the bread, what makes the milk suddenly kosher for Pessach ...?

I miss my "chametz" cereals ...

Tonight I made some errands at AM:PM, and on the way back home, two high school youngsters asked me: "Giveret, tirtzi she'naazor lach im ha'sakyiot?" (Madam, would you like us to help you with the bags?"). I was so bored and I pretended not to understand Hebrew, so the same guy added: "Hi lo mevina ivrit. Raita et ha'tachat shela?" (She doesn't understand Hebrew. Did you see her ass?). And then, they passed me by chatting about their problems.

And here I was, alone with my three bags moving my 'ass' back home. I was shocked to be called "giveret" - am I suddenly so old so that young people could call me like this? And since when my bottom is an issue for the high school kids?

Yehuda Atlas at Helicon

This week I went to a public lecture of Yehuda Atlas on children literature, hosted by Helicon Society for the Advancement of Poetry in Israel. It was a special evening, since is the first time I went to a cultural event in Israel (which I myself haven't organized) and the first time I met an Israeli poet.

Yehuda Atlas is known for his short poems written from the child's perspective. His lecture was extremely interesting and inspiring, and offered me a new perspective on children's perception of the world, apart from the perspectives already known to me from my previous experience as Hebrew teacher. I had the great honour to share with him my first impressions concerning his lecture.

And since that night I have become an admirer of Mr. Yehuda Atlas' poems.

And the person who, not only literally, opened the door for me to the Israeli poetry is Mr. Amir Or.

I dreamed

Thanks to A. I know what's the difference between "gozal" and "efroach" - the first is a baby bird which has the nest on the trees and the latter is a baby bird which has the nest on the ground. And A. told me that Bialik made a mistake because he talked about a baby bird from a nest on the tree, but actually he calls it "efroach" instead of "gozal". And still, a small mistake for the sake of the rhyme didn't stopped him from becoming a great poet!

The film itself is not a work of art, it contains cultural clishees, looks like amateur's film. But, it's funny and easy to follow.

One thing irritated me - rubber vs. eraser. The American didn't understand why Indians kept on saying 'rubber' instead of 'eraser'. Simple: because 'rubber' is British English, and it is irrelevant that Americans use this word in slang with another meaning (condoms). Indeed, when you tell an American 'rubber' he will think of somtehing else. But a little more brains will do ...

P.S. - Israelis make comments during the film like they are find themselves in front of their own TV. Silence during the screening is unknown to them ...

Happy (late) Valentine's Day

So, this is Valentine's Day in Israel - NOTHING SPECIAL! Once again I felt like these people don't celebrate ... take me to the streets and ask me if there is any holiday or celebration, and I would say NO for sure, because I don't see anything special. I can "smell" the Shabbat but I cannot "smell" holidays, Jewish or not it doesn't matter. Well, on Hanukka I did see some palm trees wrapped in lights on Ibn Gvirol Blvd. ... and Dizengoff mall full of decorations. But, hey! this time I missed Dizengoff Mall's decorations on Valentine's Day - if there were any ...

However, BIG THANKS to the Indian restaurant on the corner for the beautiful heart-shaped baloons. If it hadn't been for them, I wouldn't have known it was a holiday. Still, with a single heart there won't be any Valentine's Day ...

I miss the crowded metro exits with hundreds of people selling kitsch stuff for Valentine's Day. I miss hanging around with friends at the Valentine's Day fair. I miss the young women with red roses received from their lovers. I miss happy faces. But I don't miss this day spent without my Valentine!

This is the reaction to my "European tea ceremony" - big red cups, tea spoons, napkins, small fancy porcelain sugar bowl, small fancy box with a rich selection of teas, small fancy porcelain nana bowl, kettle with boiling water ... everything "mesudar kmo she-tzarich" (in order, as it should be).

If I were Bedouin I would drink a boiling hot Bedouin tea with a lot of sugar (I will not tell you the secret of my boyfriend's delicious tea), in a more relaxed atmosphere, sitting on comfortable pillows (and not on my stiff Ikea wooden chairs), in the middle of the nature (not in the middle of the noisy Tel Aviv) ...

But, even so, I enjoyed more the company than the tea itself, which was just an excuse.

Today I called the Cinematheque in Tel Aviv to find out some details concerning Mungiu's film. The young lady who answered me was very kind and she really struggled to help me but she seemed to missunderstand me: "There isn't such a film!" "Is it a private screening?" "I'm telling you, this film doesn't appear on my list! Listen, I will check if this film exists and maybe in the future we will host it." and so on.

How could she tell me there's no such film! My Romanian pride started to take shape: "Look, you cannot say that there's no such film when Mungiu has won so many prizes!? And how can you say this when the screening was mentioned even on your website!? I myself was there, in the audience!" ...

And then she screamed "rega!" and asked someone in the office who told her "I heard of this guy!" I thought I would go mad!

In the end, after the neverending sound of her keyboard, she concludes: "I cannot make you a reservation for a film that doesn't exist!"

And then I realized what her problem was: sequence of tenses! pararel worlds!
And how come I was unaware of the fact that I can make a reservation for a film that doesn't exist at the time we speak but existed a month ago!? That's still a mistery to me ...

Karen + Kevin = LOVE

Once upon a time there was a South-African girl called Karen from Dubai, who fell in love with Kevin, a boy from Romania, whom she met in a chatroom on the internet. She was so in love that she convinced her mother to come with her all the way to Romania to meet her love.
And when they reached Cluj-Napoca the mother almost fainted - the boy called Kevin, was in fact ... a girl! And the poor girls run away from home, to Constanta, because nobody accepted them. Karen even wants to pay her lover the costs of sex change operation.
Finally the girls were discovered and brought home. Karen's mother will forbid the internet access to her girl and will pay a psychologist to "treat" her.
The Romanian family didn't make any comments on the story, as far as I know. I wonder what happened to Kevin.

Kiriat Shmona - the city of the 8 (heroes who died in the 1920 battle for Tel Hai, including the famous Joseph Trumpeldor) -

It was a special experience to spend the Shabbat in Kiriat Shmona - from the sometimes annoying silence and the never-ending rain on Friday to the sunny Saturday and the annoying religious Jewish man who kept on asking me all kinds of questions about my mysterious existence on HaYarden Street number 16.
